Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers for Sports Recovery & Athletic Performance

For athletes & sports centres

Hyperbaric oxygen for
sport & recovery

The recovery tool now used across the NBA, NFL and football, in a chamber gentle enough to use every day. Here is how athletes actually use it, and what the research does and does not show.

From the NBA to home gyms

Do athletes actually use hyperbaric chambers?

Yes, widely. Over the last decade the hyperbaric chamber has moved from the clinic into elite sport. It is now a standard fixture in professional recovery, from NBA and NFL facilities to European football and endurance training. Publicly, athletes across basketball, football and combat sport have talked about using one, and some keep a chamber at home as part of their weekly routine.

The idea is simple. Under mild pressure, more oxygen dissolves into the blood than ordinary breathing allows. Athletes use that as one part of a recovery routine, alongside sleep, nutrition and training.

Benefits

Why do athletes use
hyperbaric oxygen?

Not for one magic result, but for a handful of practical reasons.
Here is what athletes and centres actually reach for it for.

  1. Recovery between sessions

A recovery block that fits into a training day, without leaving home or the centre.

  2. Part of a sleep routine

Many athletes use a calm session in the evening as part of winding down.

  3. Energy & readiness

A simple, drug-free habit to feel ready for the next block of work.

  4. Gentle enough for daily use

At a mild 1.5 ATA, it is comfortable to repeat as often as you train.

  5. Recover as a team

OxyLife C seats up to six athletes, so a squad recovers together.

  6. Reset after travel

A quiet session to settle back after a long trip or a heavy fixture list.

Published research

What the published research says

None of these papers studied an OxyHelp chamber. They are published work on hyperbaric oxygen in general, including trials that found no effect. Read each one for what it measured, and for the limits it carries.

Published

What one randomised trial measured after football matches

Frontiers in Physiology

Double-blind, 20 youth footballers: one hour of 100% oxygen at 2.2 ATA, above the wellness range. They felt more recovered at one hour, not at 12. Blood markers, sprint and jump did not change.

Published

Hyperbaric oxygen around exercise, reviewed

Frontiers in Physiology

A 2021 meta-analysis of ten studies, 166 participants. No significant effect of hyperbaric oxygen before exercise on performance, or after it on recovery. A possible endurance benefit during exercise still needs confirmation.

Published

Recovery methods between training sessions

Sports Medicine

A 2006 narrative review of recovery methods between training sessions: massage, cold water, hyperbaric oxygen and others. No substantial evidence that any of them speeds recovery in elite athletes.

Published

How evenly a chamber clears its own air

Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine

Researchers traced fresh gas through a hospital multiplace chamber and found under-ventilated pockets that a simple well-stirred model misses. They used oxygen as a tracer and did not measure CO2.

Published

Muscle soreness and soft tissue injury, reviewed by Cochrane

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

A Cochrane review of nine small trials, 219 participants. Insufficient evidence that hyperbaric oxygen helps sprains or muscle soreness after exercise. Soreness at 48 and 72 hours was slightly higher.

Published

One session and aerobic endurance

Journal of Physiological Anthropology

Fourteen healthy young men, one 60-minute session of 100% oxygen at 1.3 ATA against seated rest. Resting heart rate fell and heart rate variability rose. Aerobic endurance did not change.

FAQ

Questions before you buy

At a mild 1.5 ATA a session is gentle enough to repeat as often as you train. Most athletes run it as a recovery block on training days, and some use a calm session in the evening as part of winding down.

The OxyLife C line goes from the single-seat C1 E to the six-seat C5, assembled on site from modules. A squad recovers together in one session instead of queueing through a single-seat capsule.

No. We pressurise the chamber with ordinary air. The extra oxygen reaches you through a mask, fed by a concentrator that separates it out of the room. Standard feeding nozzles inside connect to any type of mask.

The chamber depressurises itself the moment the power fails, and you can open the door by hand from inside at any time. There are stop buttons inside and out, manual and software protection against overpressure, and an emergency release that brings pressure down in around 40 seconds.

Every chamber ships with a two-year warranty, extendable at purchase. After that, service and parts stay available: our own engineers work across the EU, so the chamber is repaired where it stands instead of being shipped away.
